Godzilla Vs Kong Trailer 1 and Full Breakdown

The first trailer for Godzilla Vs Kong has been released and it is amazing! Check it out below and I also have done our traditional full breakdown of the trailer looking out for all of the secrets. Don’t worry I’ll give a spoiler warning before talking about the big spoiler.

Wow they sure gave us a lot and also kept a ton of the movie secret. Hopefully this is the only trailer we get so we can keep most of the plot hidden. Well everyone let’s get to it:

First off we have a mountainside exploding outwards and it is sending giant boulders flying into the city. There is a clue showing us what is causing this explosion but I’ll save that for later.

This is the first look we get at the fleet that has captured Kong and is escorting him somewhere. The teaser audio from the YouTube ads hints that they may be trying to use Kong to lure out Godzilla.

This is Eiza Gonzalez’s character Maya Simmons. The trailer seems to be implying that she is a good guy but I think she may end up being our human villain. The way this shot is framed, she does not look very heroic.

Very cool dual logos with WB’s being Kong focused and Legendary’s being Godzilla. Also very interesting that the Kong paintings are in the style of Skull Island and Godzilla’s look more ancient.

Kong looks very unhappy as he inspects his bindings.

Alexander Skarsgard plays Nathan Lind and appears to be the protagonist of the movie and looks to have some deep ties to Kong.

Next up we have newcomer Kaylee Hottle as a Skull Island villager who has a special connection to Kong.

Looks like there’s gonna be a connection between the kid and Rebecca Hall’s Ilene Andrews.

Kong chained up outside during the rain and the little girl comes out to try to calm him down.

Very sweet and tender moment and also the first shot of the trailer that is wallpaper worthy. The cinematography is beautiful.

The look of fear on all of the characters including Kong is great for setting up the tone.

A king’s arrival is never silent and Godzilla’s entrance into the trailer is definitely loud. Godzilla slices a ship in half with his dorsal plates and doesn’t seem to care. Godzilla seems to be in a bad mood and unlike the previous films in the Monsterverse seems to be taking an antagonistic role.

Missiles do nothing to stop him.

Godzilla takes out one of the jets with his tail. He really is attacking the humans this time.

Kong roars at the water angrily and Godzilla pops out like a crocodile attacking it’s prey. As a note Kong is still chained up here and has not moved onto the aircraft carrier.

Believe it or not this is going to be Godzilla’s first fight in the day in the entire Monsterverse so far. It really shows off how detailed the CG model is and looks amazing. Also we are seeing a return to the Gareth Edwards style from 2014 with a shot looking up at the Titans from the deck of the ship.

Look everyone it’s the banner image! All joking aside this punch has an amazing sense of scale and weight to it!

Kong shoulder checks Godzilla off of the aircraft carrier but that quickly back fires for kong.

Godzilla goes under the carrier and charges up his breath attack.

Kong does his best John McClane impression and jumps off the carrier in the nick of time.

Godzilla swims away from the wrecked fleet.

Here we have Shun Oguri playing Ren Serizawa, the son of Ken Watanabe’s character who sacrificed himself to save Godzilla in King of the Monsters. Behind him is something very interesting but I’ll save that for the spoiler section.

This may end up being one of the most beautiful shots in the entire Monsterverse. Godzilla roars surrounded by the skyline of Hong Kong with it’s neon lights.

Kyle Chandler returns as Mark Russell and is commenting on how weird it is that Godzilla is hurting people. Also the news item on the screen is super important as it mentions Godzilla has destroyed Pensacola, Fl and destroyed the APEX plant there. What’s APEX? Tune into the spoiler section to find out.

Never thought I’d see Legendary Godzilla going full rampage but man oh man does it look great.

Ok there is a lot to unpack in this image but the basics are that Godzilla seems to be going around the world and attacking places with an APEX facility. I think that this is the conspiacy board of Julian Dennison’s character.

I love that Millie Bobby Brown is going to be driving a storm chaser vehicle after the Titans.

Speaking of Julian and Mille, here are their characters Josh Valentine and Madison Russel driving the van. She still seems to be on team Godzilla and suspects something is agitating him that noone knows about. Maybe he’s not really a villain after all.

Brian Tyree Henry plays Bernie Hayes and it seems like he believes Maddison’s story.

Kong surveying Skull Island. I thought this was the Hollow Earth at first but it has a sky.

Kong finds a hand print made by one of his ancestors deep in the Hollow Earth.

The level of detail on Kong in this shot is insane! Also check out the futuristic vehicle in the background! Looks like the H.E.A.V. (Hollow Earth Antigravity Vehicle) from the toys!

Kong raises his battle axe and roars! The axe handle glows red and the blade…well we’ll get there.

Kong fights the Warbats inside the Hollow Earth!

Kong and Godzilla have a stand off at dawn. Could this be after the Hong Kong battle?

Some sort of weird bat Titan down in the Hollow Earth. Maybe they are related to Camazotz?

Kong seems to be standing on a glowing ancient carving of Godzilla while he fights off the bat Titans.

Godzilla gets hammer fisted by Kong and pushed back.

Nathan doesn’t look so good here. He’s also wearing something that looks like a pilot suit.

Kong rushes at Goji with his axe glowing blue like Godzilla’s dorsal plates.

Whoa Kong catches Godzilla’s breath weapon with the axe and smashes it into Godzilla’s face! This is definitely the thing that will give Kong an edge over Godzilla in the final fight.

The opening shot of the trailer shows a mountain exploading but it’s so dusty you really can’t see the cause until this blink and you’ll miss it glimspe of our bigger threat of the film. MechaGodzilla is here folks and it looks like the mechanical Titan does not care about collateral damage.

The second glimpse of Mechagodzilla is actually a bit more obvious. If you look behin Ren Serizawa you can clearly see the blueprints of Mechagodzilla with some text that appears to say “Fury Systems: Maximum Charge.”

Now it’s time to talk about APEX Cybernetics. With a name like that you know that they are behind the construction of Mechagodzilla but what is unknown at this time is their motivations. As we saw in the brief second of actual Mechagodzilla footage, MechaG doesn’t seem to care about human death which leads me to believe APEX wants to destroy the Titans no matter what. Godzilla also seems to be attracted to APEX sites across the globe which is very interesting. I wonder if the Godzilla that is destroying cities is actually MechaG in disguise?

Opinion: Why 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' Failed To Make An Impact At The Box Office

Hey there fellow G-Fans! Forbes recently put out an article about why King of the Monsters failed at the box office this summer and while some of their points are extremely valid, I feel like they missed some very important factors that could have helped the film. Let’s deep dive into the box office disappointment that was ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ and talk about what legendary should do in the future.

Giant Monster Competition

The aforementioned Forbes article brought up a bunch of good points regarding the 5 year gap between KotM and 2014’s Godzilla, specifically the targeting the influx of other Kaiju films during the time period. Now this is where I agree and disagree with their findings at the same time. They state that KotM couldn’t find success because of there being other giant monster films around to satiate that itch as a general audience goer. While there have been other films since 2014, Godzilla as a brand even in the general population carries a ton of weight (especially when it comes to giant monster films). I don’t think there is a fatigue for giant monster films in Hollywood yet and thus I don’t think the other monster films like Rampage and Meg releasing between 2014 and KotM made much of a difference.

Of course I would be a fool to not discuss the real box office competition for KotM this summer, the massive film juggernaut that is Disney and a few other movies in the same film genre. First of we have the titan that was ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Now the fact that Avengers released a month before hand so you would think that was enough time for it’s box office impact to calm down but unfortunately for KotM it’s box office run hadn’t even come close to finishing. Now sitting at $2.7 billion world wide, there is no denying the money Avengers stole from other movies this summer. To keep with the Disney trend, one of KotM’s biggest rivals in the box office was the release of the live action ‘Aladdin.’ This film released only a week before KotM and while it received mediocre reviews, the film had a decent word of mouth and the nostalgia factor going for it. ‘Aladdin’ ended it’s run with over $1 billion dollars worldwide.

The next two films that ruined the legs of KotM aren’t Disney films but they fall into the same genre (action summer blockbusters) and they sucked all of the wind from KotM’s sails in it’s second and third weekends. Of course I am talking about ‘Dark Phoenix’ and ‘Men in Black: International.’ Now these films didn’t do very well in the box office either and got horrible critic reviews but the impact they had on KotM is bigger than you would originally think. Successful movies usually make a huge lump sum their first weekend and then lose go down a maximum of 50-60% the next weekend due to competition. KotM did not make a huge impact in it’s first weekend (due to some other factors which I will get to) and then dropped a staggering 67% in it’s second weekend when it started competing with ‘Dark Phoenix.’ That is obviously not good at it only got worse the next weekend.

The Solution: Maintain The Original Release

One of the biggest mistakes Legendary made in this regard was the decision to abandon the original release date of March 22, 2019 for a summer tent pole date of May 31, 2019. ‘Kong: Skull Island’ thrived in the box office when it released in March because it had zero competition for two weeks. KotM would have only had to deal with ‘Captain Marvel’ at the beginning of the month and then ‘Dumbo’ at the end (‘Dumbo’ failed at the box office so KotM would have stood a chance). Avengers would have killed it’s standing as King at the end of April but by that time KotM would have had a fairly healthy run (Shazam! may have taken it down to number two but it would have still been there for awhile). The fact is that Godzilla is not big enough in the current cinematic landscape to be treated as a summer blockbuster. Hopefully ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ won’t make the same mistake.

Reviews and Rotten Tomatoes: Why They Matter

Now for what is obviously a big factor in KotM’s failure, the reviews and more specifically the infamous Rotten tomatoes score. I know some of you out there have convinced yourselves that this score didn’t matter and people don’t pay attention to it or that everyone know that the algorithm is broken. Well as much as I hate to say it, the normal everyday movie goer does use Rotten Tomatoes to decide what film they go see on the weekend. The RT score shows up on various movie ticket buying sites and apps and is still the most quoted review rating in most circles. I will agree that the algorithm is a little broken (several reviews are 7 out of 10 on their respective sites and are counted as rotten) but in long run unless you are really searching for things wrong with it you are probably just going to trust the score at face value.

So now that we know the RT score is not good, it’s time to look at why KotM didn’t click with reviewers. So first we have to weed out the people who hated on the film because they have a preconceived bias or just hate the genre in general. The worst part about these reviews is that they do not look at the film objectively and for what kind of film it was trying to be. This may sound like me just trying to defend the film but I am well aware of it’s flaws and I still do respect the critics who point out those flaws. I am talking about the reviews that said stuff like:

“Budget is not normally the sort of thing you mention in a review, but when you see a film that is almost entirely driven by spectacle and you keep marveling at how slapdash and/or unreal everything looks, you do start to wonder where all the money went.”

“Is the picture any good? Uhhh. It's a Godzilla movie. So I'm going to say, "not really."“

“The whole movie is indistinguishable rubble.”

Of course a lot of these same reviewers are the exact same people who always give the Marvel/Disney films perfect scores even when their flaws are equal to if not worse than anything KotM did but I think you get the idea. One of the weirdest things that a lot of critics focused down on was the switch to being “too much monster action” when they previously said there was “not enough monster action in 2014.” This hilarious switch in opinions has been pointed out by many before but I think it’s really indicative of critics as a whole. Sometimes even they don’t know what they actually want. Sadly KotM is just not the type of film critics will like, as a Godzilla film it is a modern made Showa movie (for better and worse) and I really think an american audience doesn’t know how to process the little bit of cheese inherent in a Showa film.

Of course there is one last giant elephant in the room that I must point out that could have and should have saved this film’s bad reviews. As you saw in the image above there is a massive discrepancy in the critic score and the audience score. Also general word of mouth for the film was pretty universally positive and usually that will make a huge difference. Unfortunately I think the positive buzz for the film was killed off by the competition that I already mentioned above. There is definitely factor that halted any sort of growth for KotM that nobody seems to be talking about.

Merchandise: Where Was It?

This is by far the biggest mistake Legendary and Warner Bros. made with KotM, there was no presence of marketing or merchandise in any American stores. Now some of you might be thinking, why would there be? After all, neither Kong: Skull Island or Godzilla (2014) had that much stuff in stores. That is where you are wrong! During the marketing push of 2014 (sometime around March) store shelves were stocked full of toys, shirts, wallets, tote bags, and more. The merchandise was every where and it really helped general audience members and the families know that Godzilla was coming out soon. The impact on the box office of 2014 is extremely obvious, it opened to $93 million and made double KotM’s domestic box office overall. Believe it or not but kids like to get toys for upcoming movies and seeing Godzilla toys everywhere made them ask their parents if they could go see the film. Never underestimate the power of a film being on store shelves.

I’m sure right now you are all typing in the comment section that toys and shirts did exist for KotM and that I’m crazy but here is the biggest issue. Kong and KotM took the exact same approach to merchandise and that is the problem. Kong is not a small name to be sure but even at the height of Peter Jackson’s Kong there wasn’t a lot of merch for him. It made sense when Legendary decided to get a cheap toy making company to make the toys and of course to relegate them to Walmart only. Also keep in mind Kong was a March release which means that it had less competition so they could rely on just word of mouth and reviews to sell their film.

Godzilla is a different beast altogether and has always relied on some merchandise to help the film (from Japan to America this is the case). KotM had the Walmart exclusive toys just like Kong did but they were only at the front of the toy section for a week or so (also this was in late March early April) before they were sent to the aisles or back of the store. Of course this means that even in the exclusive retailer, Godzilla was not front and center. T-shirts were non-existent in the US, with only one being sold by Hot Topic and even then 90% of stores didn’t carry it and you had to order it. As a point of reference for the shirts issue, JC Penny sold a t-shirt for 2014 and Hot Topic had two or three on shelves at all times. There were zero random accessories like wallets or shot glasses sold in America this time around. Essentially everything that worked with the merchandising push for 2014 they didn’t do for KotM for some reason.

This whole merchandise issue caused the American general audience to lose track of the film’s release date. I can’t tell you how many people I asked about KotM after it had released only to be me with “wait that movie is out already?” There is one final factor that really hurt KotM in the long run and this one might be one of the biggest missteps.

Social Media Hype Was Non-Existent

During the final marketing push for 2014, Legendary partnered up with a bunch of popular YouTube channels to create hype for Godzilla. All of these video’s were extremely silly and cringe worthy for a G-fan but most of these videos have hundreds of thousands of views and furthered the hype of new Godzilla films to the people who matter for a successful box office run. This is just one example of the ineptitude involved wtih the promotion of KotM.

Something that they should have leaned into way more is the history behind the three main titans: Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah. When a G-fan hears these names we get hyped just from the history behind these kaiju but general audiences needed some help in that regard that sadly Legendary didn’t do. General audiences maybe recognize Mothra but Ghidorah they only know as that three headed dragon thing and Rodan they don’t know at all. We should have gotten some individual hype videos for each one showing their history and how they are just as important as Godzilla.

While the Monarch Sciences viral marketing site was pretty cool and gave fans some interesting things to talk about even then I think they dropped the ball on several aspects. The biggest thing was there were several super long gaps where the site had no updates and Godzilla was kind of just swimming around doing nothing. Also they show all of the other Titan sites around the globe but then even after the film’s release did nothing with them. They missed a huge opportunity here as they could have given bios for the new Titan’s like Behemoth and Scylla as well as maybe talking about the ones we didn’t see in the film.

Looking To The Future

With ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ on the horizon and the possibility of the continuation of the MonsterVerse I can only hope that the people in marketing over at Legendary learn from some of the mistakes from KotM and push ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ as a huge deal. I want to see toys. I want to see wrestling/boxinf style videos where they are building up the two fighters (maybe even have a weigh in). I want that hype from 2014’s marketing push. KotM while not a complete failure was unfortunately not as big of a success as we all wanted it to be. Hopefully ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ will be the big box office success we need for the MonsterVerse to continue on to a bright Kaiju filled future we should all want to see.

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters" Final Look Trailer and Breakdown

Well I’m kind of surprised we got one more trailer for this movie since it releases literally a week from today but here we are. Keep in mind that this trailer does contain some footage that some would consider spoiler territory. Consider yourselves warned! If you don’t care about a super minor spoiler that we’ve known about since the toys released and Trailer 2 happened…well then you have come to the right place!

First thing to notice (and most G-fans have already jumped on the hate train) is the song choice of ‘Mama said knock you out’. I may be crazy but I think this is a reference way back to the year of 1996 when Godzilla won the Lifetime Achievement Award from MTV.

Anyway enough about the music let’s breakdown the few new shots we got in this trailer.

First up we have another brief glimpse of the Rodan and Mothra battle. Not sure what that big flash is…

I don’t think this shot is new but this is a really nice moment between Goji and Serizawa.

Looks like adult Mothra has a new ability! Or should I say a carried over ability from her previous form? Mothra used String Shot!

Okay so I accidentally stumbled upon this terrifying shot of Ghidorah chasing after and destroying this vehicle. Jesus the Ghidorah in this movie just might give some people nightmares.

Ok so we’ve definitely seen this shot in a different trailer but we get to see what happens right after this.

Godzilla is a such a good boy in this movie. He protec but he also attac.

Now the next photos are the ones some would consider spoiler territory!

This is the clearest look we have gotten of our MonsterVerse version of Burning Godzilla (who we have learned is called Fire Godzilla officially). I love that every crease and fold of Goji’s skin is glowing red like lava. Also look at those glowing red eyes!

Looks like Fire Godzilla has lightning jumping between his spines! This is legitimately something that I have always wanted to see on a Godzilla design!

Look at that size difference! Right after this screenshot Mothra actually bitch slaps Rodan with her new claw like appendages. This Mothra can scrap!

Finally we have 100% confirmation that the object falling from the sky is Godzilla. How in the heck will Kong stand a chance against a creature that can survive an orbital drop? I guess we’ll find out next year!

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' Final Trailer Breakdown

The final trailer for ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters released this morning and is now the number 1 trending topic on twitter. So I might as well do my patented breakdown of the third and final theatrical trailer. Check it out!

I’m going to skip over a few of the things we have seen in other trailers but for the most part I’ll be going scene by scene and talking about this beautiful trailer. First thing to mention is the use of “Somewhere over the Rainbow” again. Very good choice and once again the music really sets the tone of the trailer.

First up is a shot that has been used in almost every single trailer and TV spot. The thing to notice this time is that this definitely seems like finished and polished CGI. Lots more details in the wings now.

Mothra breathes out onto Madison in what will probably be a pretty adorable scene early in the movie.

I say this is early because look how happy this family is. Things don’t seem to be sunshine and rainbows between these two later according to some of the other footage we have seen.

Another shot from a previous trailer but with the polished CG. Mothra is using her “god rays” at Kyle Chandler’s character. Wonder why…

Rodan opens his eye as he awakens inside his volcanic home.

Ghidroah awakens! You can definitely hear the bidibidibidi in this shot as well as it looking absolutely fantastic.

King Ghidorah charges up his gravity beams and is about to rain hell on the soldiers down below as seen in the IMAX special preview clip.

This is still by far the most visually stunning sequence we have seen thus far. They definitely touched up the CG a bit here as well and added a bit more lightning to when he’s standing on the top of the volcano.

When Ghidorah stares at you like this you know you are in trouble.

This is definitely Mike Dougherty dropping one of those Toho easter eggs. Godzilla always does interesting things to water whenever he pops out no matter the era. Toho era was a lot of bubbles. Legendary opted for a whirlpool. I love it!

Very realistic looking volcanic eruption as Rodan is awakened.

Man I really pity all the people who live in the city down below. Love the lava trails coming off of Rodan.

This is some primo boots on the ground action. The people flying up in the up draft of Rodan passing above is a very cool and terrifying effect.

This poor kid doesn’t look like he’s gonna make it. I love how even in the cut up trailer, the kid almost dying pulls off some emotional heft.

Serizawa walks up the steps in Goji’s temple.

Serizawa is probably setting up the bomb we saw explode all the way back in the first trailer. Not sure he’s gonna make it out of this movie alive.

Yeah that looks like a very sad Serizawa sacrificing himself to help a weakened or sleeping Godzilla. Gonna be a very emotion filled sequence.

Here’s that practical effect skin that Mike Dougherty confirmed a little while ago.

Man the close up CG effects sure are top notch.

Looks like the Super X bomber thing is joining in the fight with Godzilla and the jets against Ghidorah.

The ice prison of of Ghidorah cracks open.

Looks like Ghidorah will be taking Godzilla on a magical flight at some point in this film. Wait didn’t we see something back in the other trailer where it looked like Godzilla was falling from a great height?

Can we talk about the greatness that is trailers matching the music with the footage? Cause this is a perfect example of this editing technique. Also in almost every shot we see of the fight between Godzilla and Ghidorah it looks like Ghidorah has the upper hand. Not going to be an easy win for old Godzilla.

Ghidorah tackling Godzilla to the ground and I think this relates to a shot later of a building being blasted.

This shot is of Ghidorah’s Super Lightning Attack and you can see Godzilla struggling to stay standing after this ability goes off. Not sure why Ghidorah is able to shoot lightning from everywhere but it still some very shocking imagery don’t you think?

Ok yup that is most definitely Godzilla reentering the atmosphere. I’m guessing Ghidorah got tired of dealing with him and decided to take Godzilla for that ride we saw earlier.

Angry Moth noises intensify! She’s looking a bit worse for wear here with some pretty gnarly burns on her wings.

Man they are really not hiding the fact that Mothra is most likely going to die in this film. I mean that’s what usually happens when she shows up in a Godzilla film but still…

Here is that shot I spoke of earlier of Godzilla accidentally hitting a building with his breath after Ghidorah takes him down to the ground.

Looks Like Godzilla and Ghidorah are going to tussel in the water at some point in the film.

Godzilla taking a breather. He definitely looks beat up here and that lines up with Ghidorah having the upper hand most of the time. Maybe this takes place after Godzilla gets air dropped?

Godzilla using his new powered up atomic breath to push Ghidorah off of him. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this shot but damn is it impressive.

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' Final Trailer - Oh My God...Zilla

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' TV Spots "Ghidorah", "Monster," and "Balance" - Highest Quality and Breakdowns

Another day, another bunch of TV Spots. This time there isn’t a ton of new footage but the stuff here is amazing and one of them just might give us a better clue on some story elements for the human characters. Check them all out!

Alright so as per usual I’m gonna breakdown the new stuff that we got from these 30 second trailers. Let’s star off with the one titled Ghidorah.

Godzilla and Ghidorah are all sorts of tangled up during this quick glimpse of one of their fights. These are the battle scenes I am most excited for since it looks like they are going to pull off some choreography that people in suits are unable to do. I do want to address the gonorrhea joke really quick. Is it dumb? Yes. Is it going to ruin the movie? No.

Godzilla roaring in the antarctic. I think this might be right as the first Godzilla Vs Ghidorah fight begins in the Antarctic.

Rodan and Mothra having a dogfight. This shot was actually in trailer two but with Rodan removed. Sneaky sneaky.

Okay so it seems like they really aren’t trying to hide Burning/Fire Godzilla any more. We have no context for why Godzilla gets powered up in this movie but between this shot, the brief glimpse in trailer two, and the final shot of the IMAX preview in front of ‘Shazam!’we know it’s going to happen.

By far the best scene to come out of all three of the TV Spots we got today. Man Godzilla’s breath really does seem like it’s gotten one hell of an upgrade. I love it!

Onward onto “Monster”:

Starts off with another part of Vera’s speech. Millie Bobby Brown’s character Madison does not seem to agree with what s being said.

“This isn’t the way! You said you were gonna be careful, that you’d restore balance.” Madison is yelling at her mom. This leads me to believe that Vera’s character may have tricked Madison into going along with waking up all of the Titans. Madison probably realized how stupid of an idea this was after Ghidorah has been awakened and is on the way to destroying the world.

Pulled straight from the IMAX sneak peek. Rodan is really channeling his inner Giant Claw in this shot.

Not much in the TV spot “Balance” but let’s take a quick look anyway:

Rodan comes out of his barrel roll. I just screenshot this because he looks awesome.

Brief new glimpse of Ghidorah which I really didn’t think anything of at first. Then I noticed that Ghidorah is missing his left head!

Finally we get a quick shot that definitely takes place during whatever the Mothra Larva shot in the last TV spot was. Note the red lighting.

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' TV Spots 'Run' and 'Beautiful v2' - Highest Quality and Breakdowns

You know who it is! Last night there were a couple of surprise new TV Spots that aired and they actually gave quite a few more quick looks at the film. This is not an April Fools joke I promise.

This one is titled ‘Run’:

And this one is a shortened ‘Beautiful’ TV Spot with a few new shots:

Man Legendary is doing a bang up job showing the scale of this conflict. Unlike the last breakdown where I went through every minute detail of the TV Spot, this time I will be focusing only on the brand new content.

Let’s start off with ‘Run’:

This is the lead up shot to Godzilla firing off his call to arms beam. I love having a Godzilla with personality again.

This is the first shot that was actually part of the exclusive footage shown at Wondercon. Vera Farmiga’s character sets off a series of bombs in the antarctic to awaken Ghidorah. Now why would she want to go and do that?

Madison is running towards the Mothra Larva who doesn’t seem as peaceful as in the other trailers. Looks like something may have upset her (notice that the lighting is very different from every other shot of the Larva).

This is probably one of the best Rodan silhouette shots we have gotten from these trailers and it goes by super fast (hence the image being a bit blurry). We have talked about our love for this design to death but there is no denying how perfect he looks.

So it seems the official number of known titans is seventeen. This matches pretty closely with the amount of locked Monarch sites on the viral marketing website. Wonder how many we will get glimpses of in the film?

The next two shots are from the exclusive Wondercon footage and this one is of Ghidorah awakening. You really get a good look at how long his necks really are in this shot.

Ok so apparently Ghidorah is gonna get all of the amazing wallpaper worthy scenes in the film. Ghidorah seems to be pulling in the electrical energy from all around him and shooting it out of his wing tips. You can spot Godzilla get blasted away by this attack as well. Last thing to note about this is that is definitely Boston so this is from the climax.

So there are a couple of things to notice here. The first and most obvious is the map with all of the Monarch sites flashing on the left. Are all of the Titans waking up? On the right you can see the amazing scene of Ghidorah roaring on the top of the volcano. Little bit of trailer trickery here shows that Rodan is flying around Ghidorah in this trailer. They may be pulling a Marvel and slightly editing some shots to keep us guessing. The trailer implies that this is where Charles Dance’s character says his “Long Live the King!” line. If you recall I called that he was talking about Ghidorah way back in the Trailer 1 breakdown.

Man I love when they show off giant monsters roaring in environments where there are particulates flying around. Really shows the power of the air coming from mouths.

It’s interesting that this shot is flipped from when it showed up back in trailer two. Wonder which one will be in the finished film.

Ladies and gentlemen the Devil with Three Heads. Enough said.

First real scene of the physical battle between Godzilla and Ghidorah. This is the kind of stuff I am most interested to see in this film since there is no longer the motion limitation of suits.

Godzilla seems to really show off his beam in this film after only using it twice in the previous film. Maybe he’s powered up somehow? Or did he not use it in the last film cause he was still a sleepy boy?

A very good freeze frame of the new beam. Gone is the wispy fire from 2014. Now we have a very traditional Millennium/Heisei beam. I kinda liked the more realistic touch of 2014’s breath but just like in the Toho movies as he fights more powerful adversaries, he needs a more powerful attack to stand a chance.

The ‘Beautiful v2’ TV Spot only had three new things :

Another version of the destruction of DC. Ghidorah’s silhouette is way more noticeable in the sky.

We know each head’s facial expression is performed by a different motion capture artist but this is the first really good look at that. Each head has a very distinct expression. The right head looks like it may be maliciously evil, the left seems to be scheming, and the middle of course is the leader of the three. There’s a scary look of intelligence on the middle heads face that is extremely creepy and off putting.

'Godzilla King of the Monsters' Beautiful TV Spot - Highest Quality and Breakdown

Normally we reserve breakdowns for full length trailers but this TV Spot is a special case. Coming in at a full minute long this is almost a miniature trailer 3 and gives so much new footage that it will make your eyes pop out of your head. Check it out!

So much to unpack in this trailer so let’s just get started:

Rodan! This shot was in the previous TV spot but I didn’t post about that one so let me just say how stunning this is here. Rodan is after that Super X jet thing.

Ghidorah! This shot is from the second trailer and is of Ghidorah awakening in the Antarctic. I still really love the lightning charge effect as it goes up his necks.

Mothra! Of course this is a reused shot from the very first trailer. The CG is definitely more complete this time around and it looks beautiful. This isn’t the last shot from the first trailer used in this TV spot either. I’m actually really digging how they are only really giving brief before and after add ons to scenes we sw in the other trailers. Really keeps the rest of the movie hidden.

Oh my! It took me way longer than I’d like to admit to realize they were making a “Lions, Tigers and Bears! Oh My!” Wizard of Oz reference and that is why ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ is the song in the TV spot. This is Bradley Whitford who is playing a scientist who was described in the set reports as a Rick from ‘Rick and Morty’ type character. not sure how I’ll feel about that by the end but…

Here is that mountain Titan from the second trailer and other TV spot. This is the Titan in Germany as you can see in the bottom left corner. Also there are some rumors that this one is called Methuselah who in biblical history supposedly lived to the age of 969. Very interesting.

Kyle Chandler definitely seems to be shaping up to be the main character of the film. He gets several really good one liners in this TV Spot.

An extension of a shot from the earlier trailers. Ghidorah is looking for something after landing in the Fenway Park stadium in Boston.

Trailer 1 shot with finished CG again. This time it’s much easier to tell that this is in Fenway Park. Looks like he found who he was looking for.

This is the “Oh Shit” shot from the previous trailer but now with context. Madison see’s that Ghidorah has found her and is absolutely not okay with that. I think that this is followed by the shot from the first trailer when Madison is running away from the gravity bolts.

Same shot from trailer two of the scorpion/spider Titan rising in the desert somewhere. I never noticed the Monarch logo on the truck until now.

And now for probably my two favorite shots from the TV Spot. Ghidorah cackles from atop the volcano Rodan popped up from. This shot and the next are so beautiful/wallpaper worthy it is ridiculous. I don’t think I ever in my lifetime would find Ghidorah legitimately terrifying but this movie is proving me wrong.

Love the imagery and symbolism here. Where is your Godzilla now?

Trailer one shot again but now we get to see this from the ground level.

As we say all the time on the cast this is wonderful boots on the ground sequence with the G-Team trying to save some kids from being blown away from Rodan’s passing. Very scary imagery.

Horrified by the destructive power of Rodan.

Our first really good look at Rodan’s face as the military tries to shoot him in it. I’m a huge fan of how they designed his jawline to make it always look like he has an evil grin going on. The ancient civilizations seeing this would have definitely added some demonic lore to his legend just on this fact alone.

Well folks Idon’t think Mothra is getting out of this film alive. Not really surprising since she usually dies in any movie she is in but this pretty much confirms it. We get a really good look at her colors in this shot and she is definitely beautiful.

“Mr. Godzilla, I don’t feel so good…”

Shot of Ghidorah awakening for the first time in the Antarctic. You can see the bits of ice on his tail still and of course the snowstorm kind of givens it away too.

“This time we join him!” Very cool line and it lines up with the very heroic Godzilla the MonsterVerse is going for. I wonder how they are going to explain why Kong and Goji are going to fight since they are pretty much both the good guys in this universe.

Mothra Larva shot from trailer one. Madison really seems like she is going to have a connection to a lot of the Titans.

Mid-air collision of Ghidorah and Rodan incoming. I’m pretty sure this takes place right after the flashing Ghidorah shot and the Rodan jet chase.

While I don’t think Rodan is going to die here I do believe that Ghidorah is going to win this fight very easily.

Actually the next shot shows Rodan having the upper hand. Maybe it won’t be so easy after all.

Godzilla says hello to the tiny humans on the sub. I love the rain pouring off of Godzilla in this shot.

“Excuse me can you point me in the direction of the three-headed dragon?”

Godzilla descends back into the water and we get an amazing look at his new dorsal plates. I liked the 2014 spikes but these just scream Godzilla to me.

Quick look at the rounded tail slapping back into the water as he swims away. This is one of the design changes I am not really a fan of. Godzilla had a rounded tail throughout most of the films but honestly I like the aesthetic of the pointed tail a lot more.

Serizawa gets up close and personal with a presumably injured Godzilla. This is an extention of the Godzilla lair shots from the other trailers.

Is that a practical Godzilla snout? if not that’s some really impressive CG.

Let me tell you about my best friend! The military charges with Godzilla towards the final confrontation with Ghidorah in Boston.

Madison seems to be standing in the destroyed Fenway Park watching Godzilla approach. Did she call him here somehow and accidentally get Ghidorah first? Hmmmm…

This looks like it would be the perfect place for the new Godzilla theme to play.

Surprisingly this is the first shot we have of Godzilla and Ghidorah actually fighting one another. This is Boston again and I love that Mike is continuing Gareth’s trend of showing the monster fights from the human perspective. I’m sure we will still get the big sweeping battle shots but these really ground the film and make the Titans seem huge.

During these last few shots we get the coolest line in the trailer, “This is Godzilla’s world. We just live in it.” That pretty much sums up the theme of this movie that Mike seems to be going for. Humans are no longer the dominant species of planet earth.

Also glad to see the charging effect is back again from 2014. Also something to note is that this shot does not link up with the next as the TV spot would like you to think. This shot is definitely from the Antarctic battle hinted at in the last trailer. Note the snow.

And of course we end on the call to arms shot from trailer one.

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' Trailer 2 Breakdown

Yes I know this isn’t from the trailer but man is it cool!

Hello everyone! So one of our new patrons requested that I actually do the breakdown for Trailer 2 even though it is now one month since the release. I of course was thrilled to take another deep look through the trailer and find all of it’s hidden secrets. Let’s dive in!

One of the first shots in the trailer is a bunch of dead fish floating on the surface of the ocean. Since we the know the Oxygen Destroyer is playing some sort of role in the film that would be my guess for the context of this scene.

Crowd running from the giant Rodan after he awakens from the volcano in Mexico. This looks to be one of the more thrilling titan-human interaction sequences in the film. You can really tell Michael Dougherty’s love for our favorite big firey Pteranodon.

This shot is extremely similar to a shot in the first trailer and this is definitely Washington DC being wiped out. The first trailer showed Rodan flying around but in this trailer you can clearly see Ghidorah up in the clouds. Could they be teaming up in some way or are they fighting eachother and wrecking DC in the process? Also this shot seems to be from inside of some sort of aircraft (maybe the big bomber looking super X plane).

Very cool shot of Rodan emerging from the volcano! I’m guessing this scene takes place right after the explosion from the first trailer.

Here we have the Antarctic base where Ghidorah is sleeping. Keep this shot and this plane in mind for a couple of interesting edits later in the trailer.

Ah yes this is the first big surprise of the trailer, some sort of scorpion/spider Titan popping up out of the ground. Mike Dougherty has spoken several times about there being a few other creatures in the film but I really didn’t think we’d get a good look at any of them in the trailers. Lot’s of people have speculated that this might be a cameo of the Toho kaiju Kumonga but I really doubt that. Weider things have happened I suppose but fans shouldn’t get there hopes up.

Thomas Middleditch, who has been described as the liason between Monarch and the US government is giving a speech to the supreme court about the new Titan’s being discovered and the threat they pose. You can see the back of the heads of a couple of returning characters here as well but we’ll talk about them in a second.

Rodan taking flight for the first time after waking up. You get a really good look at his face within the smoke here but the most interesting thing here is the big super X bomber plane flying away. Is this Monarch’s plane or somebody else’s?

Mountains move in the Monsterverse! All kidding aside this is the second monster in the trailer that we had absolutely no idea about until now. Fans are screaming that it’s Anguirus or Baragon but I’m sticking to my theory that this is another original Titan. Mike Dougherty mentioned designing some new monsters in an interview back in the day.

Another look at the underwater city from the first trailer. There seems to be some sort of lava flow at the bottom.

Godzilla stares back from the ocean depths while his dorsal plates light up. We have seen this scene before but you cannot deny the beauty of this scene. This movie has already won me over with it’s cinematography but it’s great that I keep getting little treats like this shot.

Mothra Larvae full body shot! I love the look of the larval form and how it has color similarities to the adult form we see later in the trailer. The color blue is being used for every shot of the '“good” monsters and I love it.

Adult Mothra showing off her “God Rays” to a human. I think this may be Kyle Chandler’s character but that’s just a hunch.

Rodan flying over Mexico and his shock wave causes the poor humans to go flying in his wake. I love how his silhouette here is quintessential Rodan. Like If you showed me this image with no context I would assume this was a screenshot straight from a Toho film. Beautiful design work!

NOT THE DUNKIN’ DONUTS! GHIDORAH DO YOU HAVE NO SHAME!? Seriously though what is with these movies and their donut partnerships. First Krispy Kreme in Power Rangers and now…

Ghidorah’s big old spikey tail comes swinging by the camera. I love this shot because it mirrors the Godzilla reveal shot from the first trailer for Godzilla (2014). Very cool. This definitely takes place in Boston at Fenway Park which is important to know because the location changes in the next shot.

And now we are back in the Antarctic to get our first full body shot of the king of terror himself! Remember how I told you to pay attention to the Plane landing at the base? Well here it is on the ground in front of Ghidorah. Also there is one heck of a snowstorm going on!

CCH Pounder is in this movie?! She voiced Amanda Waller back in the old DC shows and is a great actress.

Tom’s character looks super nervous here after CCH Pounder made her little pet remark. I’m guessing it’s because his boss is sitting right behind him.

Admiral William Stenz is back baby! It’s really great to see a few characters from 2014 returning to keep continuity.

Ken Watanabe always gets the greatest lines!

Godzilla isn’t looking so good here. I’m guessing this is in the underwater temple due to the lava flow and clearly the man in the suit is Dr. Serizawa. In the first trailer we saw him walking dramatically up some steps with lava all around him. Looks like he was going to visit a not so healthy Godzilla.

Oh look another human/Godzilla connection scene. I wasn’t super sold on the scene in 2014 with Ford but this looks to be between Godzilla and Serizawa which actually is pretty poignant. I’m not sure of the exact context but this could be an interesting twist on the Godzilla/Serizawa relationship from 1954 Godzilla.

I don’t think Madison saying “Do you think he’ll be ok?” is referencing Godzilla here. Maybe her dad? The person she is speaking to might be her mom.

Man when Godzilla wants to move he can move! He seems to have gotten tired of the humans looking at him from the sub.

Madison and some scientists looking over a railing in the Temple of the Moth. How do we know where they are you ask? Well in the background there is a very familiar mural…

The devil has three heads indeed! Jesus this Ghidorah can pull off some nightmare fuel expressions.

Something falls from the upper atmosphere with the telltale golden lightning and storm that say Ghidorah is nearby. Is he falling though?

Wait is that a single tail? Oh my god I think that may be Godzilla!

Rodan shows off his speed by catching up to a jet.

Wow look at her! Unlike the S.h. Monsterarts figure we really get a good look at her bright vibrant colors. Also she’s definitely got some fighting arms as Michael Dougherty talked about. I like it!

So it looks like she may be having an aerial battle with Rodan in this sequence. Look at the fire in the background behind her.

So this is clearly right after the sequence where Ghidorah wakes up. Godzilla must show up right away since the plane that was in front of Ghidorah earlier is still there. Also geeze the size difference is amazing to see. A lot of fans have also noticed that this also may be Dougherty playing a little fan service since it almost exactly mirrors a shot from the Heisei Godzilla Vs King Ghidorah.

Man this really shows off how amazing the CGI is in this film. On the top right you can see Godzilla has a large chunk of skin missing over his left eye. I’m pretty sure this is from the very end of the film after the big battle since he didn’t have this battle damage in the shot with Serizawa.

While Ghidorah is charging up his Gravity beams you get a good glance at the level of facial expressiveness we should expect from him.

So here we have the aftermath of the big explosion from the last trailer. There looks like there is a ton debris including some ship remains getting blasted away.

Look at those fuzzy Moth antenna!

The face of Legendary Mothra might be slimmed down from her Toho counterparts but she still looks extremely recognizable. Her wings look like they glow blue when she is on the attack.

Ok well it looks like the Super X bomber plane crashes hard at some point. This looks like the antarctic but I’m not actually sure since we see the ship flying towards Ghidorah while he’s flying.

Can we talk about how stupid it is that the military continues to use TINY RIFLES to attack the CITY SIZED TITANS? No? Is it just me??

Great look at Rodan’s full design! He’s chasing after the Super X bomber and is about to get his big trailer moment. I love the beak that is so razor sharp that it almost forms teeth.

Godzilla continues his roar from the first trailer and begins his charge towards his rival alpha predator Ghidorah. He breaks into a full blown run which some find strange looking but I personally think it shows that Godzilla is taking this seriously now.

There’s a really cool visual cue that I don’t think people have picked up on in the last moments of the trailer. The lightning coming from the sky behind Godzilla is always blue and the lightning behind ghidorah is always yellow.

Ghidorah using his wings to propel himself towards Godzilla. I don’t think he will spend that much time in this position but he still looks super menacing.

There’s that yellow lightning I was talking about. Love that visual flare.

And of course the trailer ends on a big clash in Boston which takes place in the climax of the film.

And there we go! Wait whats that? You say I skipped a part of the trailer? Hmmm oh! You must be talking about how there’s a huge spoiler that was revealed by a toy in the trailer. Fans are being extremely rabid when it comes to possible spoilers for this film, so if you care about that sort of thing then stop reading the article here. But if you don’t care-

Well fans what we see here in these two trailer shots is definitely our first glance at Burning/Fire Legendary Goji. When the trailer first came out some fans misindentified this as being Rodan but if you look clase enough you can Godzilla’s big clawed hand moving behind the building that is melting/burning. I’m pretty sure this form is how Godzilla is going to defeat Ghidorah but what I’m not sure if this is a temporary power-up or something that may come back to haunt Goji in the future. Only time will tell!

And that’s the full breakdown for trailer 2! Sorry it took so long once again but now we have only 4 moths until the film releases. It’s almost here everyone!
