Godzilla: Aftershock comic - Everything We Know So Far

I leave for one weekend and it happens to be the weekend we get a bunch of details about the prequel comic to ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’. Go figure! Since I’m so late to the party here I decided to collect everything we know about the comic up to this point, including the leaked images from the panel at LA Comic Con on Saturday. Check it all out!

The first info dump of news occured on friday last week with an exclusive article by Nerdist. We got a glance at and ancient painting of our lovely Legendary Godzilla being worshiped by an ancient civilization which is super cool. In the article we also got a much better idea of what the comic will be about:

The brilliant and driven Monarch operative Dr. Emma Russell races to stop the threat as clues emerge to reveal a terrible secret—a tragedy, of apocalyptic proportions from the distant past that changed the course of human history, is returning to threaten it once more. A shadowy figure stalks Emma’s every move as she travels the globe to uncover secrets, while Godzilla clashes in an ancient rivalry as old as the earth itself. The fate of the world lies in the balance in an epic confrontation that no Godzilla fan will want to miss.

Godzilla: Aftershock is written by Arvid Nelson and illustrated by Drew Edward Johnson and takes place after the first film’s cataclysmic events in San Francisco. A new threat is rising, bringing with it devastating earthquakes, and possessing an unstoppable urge to destroy.

Godzilla: Aftershock is yet another exhilarating entry into the canon of the MonsterVerse, and it is especially exciting to introduce fans to a brand new original monster unique to the comic, but true to the legacy of Godzilla,” said Robert Napton, Senior Vice President of Legendary Comics.

Looks like the primary human character of the comic will be Emma Russel played by Vera Farmiga in the 2019 film. Hopefully along with the new threat we will get some more teases of our big three (Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah). If only we could get a glance of this new kaiju…

HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER!

The Mega-MUTO has arrived! Not quite sure exactly what this creature is but it seems to have a lot in common with the female MUTO from 2014 but there may not be a direct relation. There also is a bit of Orga in the design with the big old slappy hands.

I’m pretty sure the orange on it’s body is some sort of magma which matches the rockiness of the rest of the design and the earthquakes hinted at in the plot description.

Some people have pointed out that appears that they are pulling from some of the unused MUTO concepts from 2014 which is very very cool.

The Art of the Comic

Last but not least let’s take a look at the actual art. Unlike Godzilla: Awakening (don’t worry we’ll cover that monstrosity on the cast at some point) it appear that they will be sticking much closer to the actual film design of Godzilla and the art looks like it’ll be on the same level as the Kong: Skull Island sequel comic, Skull Island: The Birth of Kong.

The level of detail on the Titan and Godzilla are top notch and I can’t wait to get my hands on this comic.

The comic is set for a Spring 2019 release which probably will set it comfortably right before KotM hits theaters. Are you excited to read the new comic?
